Rock decay phenomena and collapse processes in the “Latomiae del Paradiso” in Syracuse (Sicily)

2014

The Latomiae (origin: Greek latomia, from laas, las stone plus –tomia tomy ) del Paradiso in Syracuse are Magna Graecia rock quarries, located in the coastal areas of Southern Italy and internationally renowned for their impressive environment. The few historical technical records do not help clarify the events that led to their current configuration since a series of instability phenomena occurred due to decay processes over time. Through a geotechnical back-analysis, this work highlights the failure phenomena, which may have led to the current configuration of the easterly side of the Latomiae del Paradiso. The back-analysis process was carried out by means of numerical modelling, support…

Boudinage classification: end-member boudin types and modified boudin structures

2004

In monoclinic shear zones, there are only three ways a layer can be boudinaged, leading to three kinematic classes of boudinage. These are (1) symmetrically without slip on the inter-boudin surface (no-slip boudinage), and two classes with asymmetrical slip on the inter-boudin surface: slip being either (2) synthetic (S-slip boudinage) or (3) antithetic (A-slip boudinage) with respect to bulk shear sense. In S-slip boudinage, the boudins rotate antithetically, and in antithetic slip boudinage they rotate synthetically with respect to shear sense. We have investigated the geometry of 2100 natural boudins from a wide variety of geological contexts worldwide. Five end-member boudin block geome…

Teaching the Romanian neighbors Hungarian: language ideologies and the Debrecen Summer School

2016

AbstractThis article is a contribution to the hitherto scant literature on learning a historical minority language and on language ideologies in the context of a study abroad program in Hungary, Debrecen. I analyse the language ideologies of the decision makers in Hungary and in the Debrecen Summer School in relation to the teaching of Hungarian to the neighboring peoples. Drawing on interactional data of participants from Romania, the perspective of learning Hungarian as a historical minority language is examined. The present article combines a historical approach with language ideologies by focusing on an institution offering language education. Language ideologies are presented as they a…

2017

During the 19th Century and with the first translations of Don Quixote to japanese, Cervantes’ work started to be part of the country’s mass culture. As a manifestation of this phenomenon, the manga absorbed the image of the knight-errant. This comic genre adapted it to its aesthetic criteria and merged it with its history and folklore. At the same time, the manga has been exported to Western world, where readers and artists are familiarized with its characteristical style. Hence, Don Quixote works together with the manga as a bidireccional bridge between Japan and Spain. Far from the novel, the universality of this classic will find its way into the drawing and will take as base the popula…

Framing Scandals: Cognitive and Emotional Media Effects

2012

When covering violations of social norms by public figures, the mass media depict the resulting damages and attribute responsibility to actors. These depictions of responsibility constitute frames that elicit reactions from recipients. A theory regarding the effects of these media frames on cognitions, emotions, and opinions is presented. Content analyses of the media coverage of four cases and corresponding surveys were conducted. The findings indicate that the cognitions, emotions, and opinions of recipients cannot be sufficiently explained by learning of media input; recipients process the content based on individual frames. They complement fragmentary media frames and generate consisten…

2011

This article aims to illustrate how became a fundamental communicative resource for the mass media when reporting on the H1N1 virus during the swine flu health crisis. This analogy heightened public fear so much so that many individuals demanded that the government acquire certain drugs and vaccines to protect themselves from the virus. This research is based on the information which appeared in three national dailies –El Pais, El Mundo and ABC– over a six-month period, as well as academic publications, documents and articles available in the media and Internet.

Tempo lembrado, lido e experienciado no texto virtual

2015

In this article I will scrutinize Screen (2002, by WARDRIP-FRUIN & al.), a literary work set and experienced in a CAVE Virtual Reality environment, especially from the perspective of its temporal aspects. There are obvious themes of remembering, forgetting and textually constructing the past in this work, but most notably, Screen emphasizes the temporality of the reading act itself. I will analyze this highly special work in relation to the remembered, read, and bodily experienced time, and thus, attempt to better understand both the notion of fictive time and the temporality of fiction.
